The Capitol Celebrates Black History Month
HARRISBURG—Speaker of the House Dennis M. O’Brien joined members and guests of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus in celebrating February as Black History Month in the Capitol today. The commemoration noted the history of the Black Caucus expressed through poetry.
“The contributions of the African-American community to the Commonwealth – and the nation – are as large in number as they are in heart,” O’Brien said. “It’s our duty to carry on and promote time-honored traditions such as these, paying tribute to the heritage of African-Americans.”
Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland said “The celebration of Black History Month has always been one that identifies the contributions and successes of African-Americans nationwide. Today in the year 2008, it is even more noteworthy because of the fact that a black man, Sen. Barack Obama, could possibly become the first African-American President in the history of the United States of America. Our ancestors were right, we shall overcome.”
To honor the dedicated African-American committee chairs throughout the history of the Pennsylvania legislature, poets Iya Isoke, Nathaniel Gadsden, Shaashawn Dial, Jason Moffit and Gi recited poems.
A highlight of the ceremony was the accompanying musicians Carlos Washington and The Amazing Giant People Ensemble performances.
In addition to Speaker O’Brien and Rep. Kirkland, Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker-Knoll, Majority Leader Bill Deweese and Cheyney University President Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital spoke at the event.
