O’Brien praises Nutter choice for police commissioner

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 15 – House Speaker Dennis O’Brien supports Mayor-elect Michael Nutter’s selection of Charles H. Ramsey to be the next commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department.

“This is a crucial time both for the city and the police department. I’ve heard great things about Chief Ramsey. While he led the department in Washington, crime and violence declined and residents’ attitudes about police responsiveness improved.

“I believe Michael Nutter made an excellent choice to lead the department during this critical period,” O’Brien said.

“We’ve been reminded tragically of just how perilous it is to be a police officer, but the dedication of the department’s officers and leadership has never been questioned.

“More than any other group of city employees, our police are a highly visible symbol of the city and a beacon to residents and visitors alike. Today’s announcement gives me hope in a bright future for Philadelphia,” he said.
